President’s Message

Hi guys. Well the three H's are upon us....Humid Hot and Hazy and only halfway through the summer. I’m loving every minute of it.

We had a great time at Rhinebeck. The Culinary luncheon was wonderful but most importantly the company was great. It was disappointing to see such a few numbers of coaches but the few that came had a great time.  Thank you Moe and Pat for a job well done.

Participation in the rallies has been really low in general. I know there are times when not everyone can make the rallies but for the people running them and setting them up, it takes time whether it be for 5 coaches or 25!!

Mal Ford is doing a great job as Wagonmaster but please help him in making his job easier.

We are loving our new home in Delaware. We never had grass before and now we’re making up for it! We hope to see some of you guys down here in Delaware in August. We can't wait.

Wagonmaster’s Message:

Hi to my fellow RVers and Metropolitan members out there.  Our rallies have not been well attended.  It seems as if we have a small core group who still get out to events, but the majority hasn’t been participating.  I have tried some new camping locations, tried joint campouts with other FMCA Groups, but again, only a small group attends.  Maybe the second half of the season will be better?  In August we have a joint campout with the Empire FMCA in Copake, NY.  The Empire group has 15 rigs participating and we have one.  The September rally in Saugerties, NY, to coincide with the Garlic Festival, has only 4 rigs participating from Metro.  Mo has gotten information together for an “on your own” rally at West Point in September; let’s hope that we can get some interest in that.

What can we do to help you fire up your rigs and get out to these rallies?  If there are other locations you would prefer, other dates that work better for your schedules, or if you just don’t camp that much anymore, let me know.  This is your Club.  Get involved and help us make it a fun time for everyone.

The bottom line is we want to see you at these Rallies!

Last Call for the September Saugerties Garlic Festival Rally.  Please email me at malford27@hotmail.com if you are interested in attending and have not as yet sent in your reservation.  Do to this being a very popular weekend, the campground will not hold our reserved spots beyond this week.  So if you want to attend, act now!

Mo has gotten information regarding West Point.  A flyer explaining how you should make arrangements for this weekend is also included following this section.

Mo’s Musings:

Reality Check

Mo Magliocchino

I am sure that all of you have seen the numerous emails on the internet regarding the influx of illegal immigrants and the various proposals the government has come up with to resolve this issue.

The reality is that this country would literally fall apart if these individuals were deported since they now do all the manual labor that we all used to do, and at reasonable rates, minus benefits.

Ninety five percent of all the fast food restaurants would have to shut down, people would have to learn how to use a lawn mower and hedge trimmers again. The Italians would have to go to masonry school to learn the trade that is legendary to their nationality. Not to mention learning how to make pizza again or bake Italian bread. Having worked in construction all my life, I have witnessed how these individuals now do all the really hard jobs that no one else wants to do, and they do it in all kinds of weather and conditions like extreme heat or pouring rain. Also bad news for the woman who would have to learn how to do house cleaning once more, and figure out how to use the washing machine and vacuum. Who is doing all the less than pleasant jobs in our hospitals and apartment houses, or department stores that require janitorial services, etc.

None of this is anything new, just history repeating itself.

I would venture to say that not many of us can trace our roots back to Sitting Bull, rather some ethnic group that came to this country via some kind of ship, and usually in steerage class. The only difference was that they didn’t have to swim the Rio Grande River, or float onto the southern shores on a rubber tube.

Our immigrant relatives faced the same problems that we see now facing this country. Many of them received welfare. Back then they called it relief and my mom used to talk about many of her friends being on it because it wasn’t anything to be proud of in those days. I am sure that there were a proportionate number of criminals included in the ranks, but the good ones survived and made this great nation what it is today.

So take a deep breath, relax and just hope that a meteorite doesn’t hit us again. The rest really doesn’t matter.

Ok, have to run to the bank before it closes, our cleaning lady comes tomorrow, and she only takes cash.

April 2013 Newsletter

Metropolitan Newsletter April2013 Issue #71

Hi members,

I am sorry to say that this newsletter is not a happy one due to the fact that we’ve lost three wonderful members and friends this past winter season. Carmela Colbert, Danny Bennett and Donald Daniels have all passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families. (Also Peggy Lux recently passed away)

Well, another RV season is upon us. Please support our rallies, come out and have some fun. Life is shorter then you think.

Some of our members are having medical issues and our thoughts and prayers are h them.

Carol and I wish you all healthy and safe travels.

GOD BLESS AMERICA Roger Whitford

Carmela

When I first went to Myrtle Beach for Easter in 1979 Carmella was the treasurer of the Metropolitan Chapter. She held that position for 17 years. Jean Pryor was the President and Joe Monteleone was the Wagonmaster. Bill Colbert followed Jean as President.

Something happened one rally. I wrote the check wrong for the campground and the check had to be voided. She was a little upset with me because this was the first time she had to void a check. She was not happy with me. We had a lot of laughs over that.

We always had great times and all the kids from that time showed up for her Memorial Service which I think was a wonderful tribute to her. She must have done something right. She would have been so happy to see all the kids. I did notice that not one of them acted as if any time had passed since they saw each other.

She collected Coca-Cola Memorabilia along with Precious Moments and Emmett Kelly statues. She had Glass cabinets full of all her treasures.

She and Bill loved being with their children and grandchildren. They really had a wonderful bond with each other. I know that I among many others will miss her greatly.

Saying Goodbye

Life’s greatest mystery, in my opinion, is why we eventually have to say goodbye to those that are closest to us. It is the ultimate test of our faith. The hope that one day we will all be together again in the Promised Land.

We first met Bill and Carmela Colbert sometime back in the nineties, probably at one of the Rhinebeck or Croton rallies. Carmela was the Metropolitan treasurer at the time. I remember teasing her all the time about making sure all the cash got in the account. I always got a quick response from her and if I wasn’t careful, a smack to boot.

I also used to needle her, every time I saw her light up a cigarette, which also got me a smack, but sometime during the rally, I would also get a great big hug, and that let me know that it was OK to tease.

Eventually, we got to meet her wonderful family and enjoy spending time with them. This usually happened at West Point. Truly good times to remember and times that no one can take away from us all.

So, the next beautiful day that comes along, and you look up and see the big white puffy clouds, check out the little tiny ones. That would be Carmela, puffing away and sending us all a big hello and a hug to go along with it. (I hope they have a smoking section in heaven).

We all miss you. Mo Magliocchino

Danny

MO MAGLIOCCHINO

As I write this, I am sitting in Florida enjoying the sunshine. Today just happens to be St Patrick’s Day and everyone is wearing green of course. Tonight, Pat and I will be going to a big party at the club house, and most assuredly, sometime during the evening, Danny Boy will be sung. (I just hope the singer is sober)

I remember how playing that song would really bother Danny Bennett. He said that he probably heard it a million times, and it got to the point where it annoyed him each time he heard it.

My first recollection of Danny was at a rally in Ulster County where he and Linda and Leroy Thomas and his wife Dot, were the rally hosts. I can still picture Dan and Leroy cooking big pots of spaghetti. For those of you that remember Leroy, he was one big nerve ending, and the sight of both of them cooking will always remain in my mind.

As I got to know Danny better, I realized we had a lot in common. We enjoyed fixing things for others and solving problems. Danny’s forte was electronics, and of course, what is a motor home, but electronics with four wheels.

Danny helped me numerous times, and really solved a lot of mysteries in my coach, as he did for many Metropolitan members.

You never got instant gratification with Dan, but he would never forget you, and sooner or later he would show up with his meter and tool box. He always did things first class, using only the best of materials and when he was done, you could count on the repair lasting forever. I guess he learned that from working on airplanes, where you don’t get a second chance.

As time went by, Dan and I developed the same heart related issues, we shared the same doctors, had our stents put in at the same hospitals and compared notes constantly about our progress, or lack thereof. Together, we were responsible for our cardiologist buying a new Porsche.

I guess God needed someone to install a braking system in his chariot, and Dan was his choice.

Thanks Dan, for all you did for me. We all have lost a great person and friend and I will miss you as I am sure all our other members will. Mo
